Street Tacos

I’ve been hooked watching Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations. There was an episode he did in Mexico that featured a small roadside cart that was whipping up tons of these street tacos.  After watching it, I was craving these little snacks of goodness. They really are extremely easy to make and very cheap. I got about 3 days worth of food, heavy eating mind you, for about $20, which is alot cheaper than going to a fast food place. You can also swap out the beef for chicken if you like.

Tempura Batter

Here’s a simple recipe for tempura batter. This is a great way to whip up some dinner if you happen to have some shrimp, veggies or even leftover chicken/steak/pork.  It only takes 5 minutes to whisk up the batter and another 5 to cook everything and you’re all set to go.  A quick dinner on the cheap is some tempura chicken on top of Ramen noodles with some hoison sauce and sriracha.

Popular Sushi Rolls and Ingredients

Fusion Sushi is the art of mixing and matching different ingredients for the inside of a sushi roll. Originally, Edo style sushi was just the rice and one ingredient wrapped in the nori sheet. As it’s popularity grew, so did the number of combinations and recipes. These are the main ones that you’ll find almost anywhere around the US that have a combination of ingredients.

California Roll

California Rolls are a type of sushi known as makizushi, which literally means “Rolled Sushi”. Every sushi restaurant does them differently but the main idea is an inside out roll (where the seaweed is inside the rice) with avocado, cucumber and crab meat.

Spicy Tuna Roll

I just got in my sushi mat set that I ordered a few days ago, so I’ve been on a sushi kick since.  I’ve made a few of these rolls for dinner the last couple days. It’s actually pretty cheap to make up sushi surprisingly, much cheaper than going out.  The main ingredients like the Rice, Rice Vinegar, Seaweeed Paper (Nori), Wasabi, Soy Sauce and a Mat all cost less than $20 total and that will give you enough stock to make dozens of rolls, just buy a little bit of the filling ingredients and you’re good to go.
