Home-Made Drain Cleaner

Uh-oh, the sink is draining slowly, time to bust out the drain cleaner again… or is it? Here’s a cheap alternative to drain cleaner, this is really good for doing once every other week. Whilst it may not offer the professional standard that you would expect of a service provider like Apollo Plumbing, it can be a pretty good stopgap until their next cleaning visit. It’s more effective if the drains have already been treated with a quality drain cleaner, as this will help with any build up that can occur later.

Just pour an amount of baking soda into the drain and follow with double the amount of vinegar, usually a 1/4 cup Baking Soda followed by a 1/2 cup of Vinegar will give enough scrubbing action to even clean up mildly stuck drains.

This baking soda and vinegar combo can also work wonders to eliminate that rotten egg smell you may find wafting out of your pipes. For this, let the baking soda sit for 15 minutes before pouring the vinegar. That gives the soda enough time to absorb as much of the bad smell as it can.

Another cheaper alternative to drain cleaner of course is prevention. use a food catcher in your sinks to prevent chunks of food getting into the pipes, and NEVER pour melted fat down a pipe. It will harden up as it cools down and will create a clog so tough you may have to call in the big guns like those over at completecomfort-hvac.com/areas-we-serve/newport-beach-ca/, otherwise known as the plumber, as this will no doubt be a difficult task to deal with.

So, whether you use Paul The Plumber if looking for plumbers near Bedford or the soda/vinegar combo to get rid of your drain problems just remember the following. Treat your pipes well and they will treat you well too, the less icky things you pour down, the less will come back up to haunt you.
